AM newsletter – 03.18.09

Welcome to the first edition of the Controlalttv’s newsletter. I’m still setting up the template of the newsletter, so I’ll post the newsletter here on the blog until everything gets straighten out.

I. Apple preview 3.0 software

Apple gave us a preview of what’s coming in the 3.0 software. The biggest item being talked around is the addition of cut and paste. There are a couple of people out that are saying this isn’t a big deal; obviously, they haven’t received an email with a tracking number from UPS. To me, it’s one of those features that isn’t important until you really need it, like when you want to track a package. Other items of note from the event:

  • No background processes. Apple closes the door on the ability for apps to run in the background. The claim is because it slows down the performance and drains the battery. I’m calling B.S. on this because Apple won’t allow background apps but they will allow listening to your music through bluetooth? Bluetooth drains your battery! I have a feeling that background processes will be added in the 4.0 software.
  • Bluetooth on iPod Touch. If your willing to pay $10, you can unlock bluetooth on the iPod Touch (2nd generation only). Why customers should be paying to unlock bluetooth is another question but unlocking bluetooth now makes the touch a true gaming device as bluetooth will be used for peer-to-peer gaming.
  • Everything else. Multimedia massaging was added. Big deal! Other features were added under the hood that the average person won’t see

II. Dell goes after the MacBook Air

Anytime Apple unveils a new product, it seems every PC maker has to follow in their footsteps. Case in point: Dell. To go after the MacBook Air, Dell releases the expensive Adamo. The MacBook Air costs $1,799, the Dell Adamo costs $1,999. The difference between the two: Adamo has a 1.2Ghz Core 2 Duo with a 32GB SSD drive, Apple has a 1.6Ghz Core 2 Duo with a 128Gb SSD drive. Both have DDR3 memory and 13.3 inch display. If I had to decide, I would go with the MacBook Air.

That’s it for today. My column for Friday will be how Twitter has reached it’s peck and it’s downhill from here.
