Britney Spears tops the list as the most used search term on Yahoo!, according to the annual report released by the search company. But before I go into a rant about today’s society, Britney Spears has been on the before. This is more about the people that use Yahoo! than how the search engine indexes society.

Here’s the remaining items from Yahoo! on the most search items used on the search engine in 2008:

  1. Britney Spears
  2. WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment)
  3. Barack Obama
  4. Miley Cyrus, “Hannah Montanta”
  5. RuneScape, an online video game
  6. Jessica Alba
  7. Naruto, a popular Cartoon Network show
  8. Lindsay Lohan
  9. Angelina Jolie
  10. American Idol

Sound familiar? It should! Here’s the most search terms used on Yahoo! from 2007:

  1. Britney Spears
  2. WWE
  3. Paris Hilton
  4. Naruto
  5. Beyonce
  6. Lindsay Lohan
  7. Rune Scape
  8. Fantasy Football
  9. Fergie
  10. Jessica Alba

And from 2006:

  1. Britney Spears
  2. WWE
  3. Shakira
  4. Jessica Simpson
  5. Paris Hilton
  6. American Idol
  7. Beyonce Knowles
  8. Chris Brown
  9. Pamela Anderson
  10. Lindsay Lohan

Britney Spears has been the top search term used on Yahoo! since 2001, except in 2004 when she lost to American Idol, Parish Hilton and Jessica Simpson. This either shows how bad our society is that celebrities searches are the top search term or how incredibility awful Yahoo! users are at searching for nothing else besides pop culture items.
