Christmas in the south came early as three radio stations dropped their original formats and went wall-to-wall Christmas music. WMJJ-FM (94.5, Birmingham, AL) flipped last week, KQIS-FM (102.1, Lafayette, LA) flipped on November 1 and KRVE-FM (96.1, Baton Rouge, LA) went Christmas last weekend.
Expect more stations in the region to flip the day after Thanksgiving when WLMG-FM (101.9, New Orleans), WMJY-FM (93.7, Gulfport/Biloxi) and WMXC-FM (99.9, Mobile, AL) are added to the list.
Many radio stations flip to Christmas because you’re almost guarantee to be number one for the month of December, especially if the you’re the only station playing Christmas. It also sends another signal that the station will switch to another format come December 26.
As of now there is no indication that any of these stations are planning a format flip after the holidays so enjoy listening to Chestnuts roasting on an open fire with the air conditioning blasting in your house.
